Did You Know Your Cat Can Develop A Form Of Alzheimer`s Disease? Some ‘Must Know’ Info!

Published on Thursday, August 28, 2014 in Cats and Kittens

Yes, as our cats and dogs  get older, they develop signs of old age same as we do. There is a cognitive disorder that mimics signs like that of Alzheimer`s in humans, especially those that are at least 7 years old. There are many signs that tell you if your pet has a cognitive disorder. Just about all of these pets will start sleeping much more than usual, such as during the daytime.

They could seem to be deaf at times or show a lack of energy. It is also very common to have the opposite problem as not being able to sleep will have your cat or dog up all hours of the night, howling and yowling. Dogs will pace around the room when they can`t sleep.

Another problem you will have to deal with is accidents in the house, instead of the dog going outside and cats will simply stop using the litter box. Cats also have other signs like not eating, recurring constipation, their coat may become thin and dry out and they might start shedding more hair than usual.

It is always best to consult your vet about your cats condition and see if any medication can help the condition.

One of the best things to do for your pet with a cognitive problem is to make sure he gets plenty of exercise. You should also have everyone in the family give him lots of attention, to help keep his mind sharp.

You should make sure you are feeding him a proper diet, such as senior food, grain-free, etc. You should do everything you can to help ensure your pet`s last years are as happy and comfortable as possible.
