Cat Litter box, common mistakes.

Published on Saturday, March 1, 2014 in Cats and Kittens

Owning a cat means providing it with a proper sleeping place and a litter box to keep it comfy and happy. However, there are many cat owners who often make a mistake when it comes to getting a litter box for their kitty. Here are five common mistakes that are often made when it comes to litter boxes.

  • Wrong Litter – The type of litter used is one of the things that cat owners make a mistake with. Most cat lovers choose litter that is scented to mask the odor of cat droppings. However, cats are not really fond of scented litter because it irritates their nose. Once they get a whiff of the scented litter they will most likely find another place to do their business. The texture of the litter is also something that cats pay attention to so a little bit of experimenting should be done.
  • Wrong Location – Cat owners often make the mistake of putting the litter box in the wrong place. Keep in mind that cats love some privacy when using their litter box so putting it in a high traffic area is a big no. You should move the litter box in a place where the cat won’t be disturbed by children or even other pets.
  • Not Maintained Enough – Cats are sticklers when it comes to cleanliness that is why they will skip their litter box if it isn’t cleaned regularly. It would be better if you scoop the litter box at least once or twice a day depending on your cat’s habits. Regular emptying and replacing of litter should be done once a week.
  • Wrong Litter Box – Litter boxes come in different sizes and shapes but if you want to do this right, you should look for a litter box that is big enough for your cat to stand on with enough room to do its business. You should also consider the height of the litter box especially when your cat is a bit old and can’t climb on top of the litter box.
  • Number of Litter Boxes – There are some cat owners who think that a single litter box would suffice in a house with several cats. This isn’t right. You should get several litter boxes so that all of your kitties will be taken care of. Getting extra litter box is also recommended so that your cats will be happy as far as doing their business is concerned.
