How do I cut my cats claws the correct way.

Published on Monday, August 11, 2014 in Cats and Kittens

If you are wondering about how to cut cats claws, then do read on in order to find out the right way to do it without causing the cat any pain or discomfort either now or as they start to grow back. If you do not know what you are doing, then this is often something that is quite difficult to do, but help is at hand if you take these simple steps into consideration.

To begin with you should start cutting their claws when they are kittens as this will let them get used to it actually happening, but before you start to cut them do get them used to you touching their paws and holding them in your hand so they do not jump when you go near their claws. This idea of being relaxed is very important as you need to make sure that they are not stressed or irritated in any way so even think about doing it when they are sleepy and never if they have just been playing.

When cutting, make sure they are relaxed on the floor, table, or even your lap and then take one paw in your hand and with the pad of your thumb press on it in order to extend the claw. You will then see some pink tissue inside the claw and this is the quick and you must avoid cutting this at all costs or it will be extremely painful for them. What you need to do is remove the quite sharp tip that is near the quick and then cut the claw approximately half way between the quick and the end of the claw.

In regard to cutting it you will often find most people will hold the clippers so they are virtually at right angles to the nail itself as this will mean that you cut across them rather than at an angle. This is actually the wrong thing to do as it will make them more likely to split and instead you should hold them so they are vertical as you will then cut it from bottom to top instead of across.

When it comes to cutting them you are best to get actual nail clippers that are designed for this particular job and they are available from pet shops or even your vet will be able to sell a pair to you. It is also advisable to keep a styptic pencil nearby as this should be applied if you do happen to cut into the quick and make the claw bleed and once again they can be bought from the same place.

So that is how to cut cats claws the correct way and without it causing you too many problems or stressing out the actual cat and if you remember those tips it really will not take too long especially after the first time you do it. Keeping your cats claws cut is important for their health in general in regard to stopping them getting hurt or hurting themselves so read over the instructions several times before trying it to stop it turning into a traumatic experience for both parties.
