How do I take care of my Koi Carp.

Published on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 in Fish

Koi carps originate from Asia, and they can reach a maximum length of 90cm. These freshwater fishes can tolerate cold temperatures. You can keep your Koi carp in a pond if you have enough space in your den. This type of fish will also thrive when kept indoors, as long as it is housed in a large tank with hundred of liters of water required for its size and age. Some owners even purchase a large, indoor pond system that can protect their Koi fish during the winter.

Looking After Your Koi Carp: A Practical Guide

The following tips will help you learn more about the proper way of caring for your Koi fish, so it will remain healthy and free from parasites.

1. Keep your Koi carp in a large tank that ranges from 350 to 1200 liters, depending on its size or the number of fishes you have. For instance, a baby Koi fish can survive in a 350 liter tank, and you need to transfer it to a bigger tank after six months. A full-grown Koi Carp should be placed 1200 liter tank, and this huge container can hold up to three adult fishes.

2. Make sure you use a filter that is appropriate for the tank size. A canister filter, for example, is perfect for large tanks. Moreover, you should clean the gravel with a siphon, at least once a week to maintain its quality. It is also important that you change the water once or twice a month, depending on the tank’s size. You may test the water, so you can determine the level of contaminants in the tank, which indicate the proper time for water changes.

3. Feed your Koi carps with pellets specifically made for this type of fish. You may feed them several times in a day; however, they rely on the temperature when metabolizing food. When the water temperature is over 15 degrees Celsius, you may feed your Koi carps a few times daily.

4. Observe and monitor the tank, and check for parasites. If you notice your Koi carps flopping against objects in the pond, it means they have an itch that may be caused by a parasite. You may only treat your fish after you have identified the type of parasite that affects it. Purchase the right medication at a local fish supply store, and follow the instructions when treating your pet fish.

Koi carps come in a variety of interesting colors such as black, cream, yellow, red, and white. They may also have different sizes, which may range from 7 to over 76cm. Make sure you follow these tips that will ensure the excellent condition of your Koi carp.
