Here`s Some Great Tips For Hiking With Your Dog

Published on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 in Dogs and Puppies

If you want to go hiking with your dog, here`s some super tips to follow, so that both of you have an awesome experience together. First, is to know your limits. If you and your dog only walk around the block 3 or 4 times, you probably won`t be in shape enough to go on that 10-km hike.

You and your dog must be conditioned for hiking, so start off with short hikes and start making them longer each time you and your dog go hiking. You should also include hills, whenever possible, to help build up yours and your dog`s stamina. Of course, both of you should be checked out medically, to be sure both of you are able to handle this type of exercise. As dogs love to please their owners, they will not want to let on that they are in pain, so they will handle it for as long as they can.

Next, is to be prepared. It doesn`t matter if it`s a short or long hike, you will need the following items; Collar and leash, just like going on your regular walks; Proper ID Tags and they must be legible with your dog`s name and current contact information. A good photo is also good to include, in case you get separated; First Aid Kit as either of you could get a scrape or cut, but a pair of tweezers should be added, for removing ticks; Vet`s phone number, in case something unexpected happens.

You just can`t be too careful or prepared!  You need Sunscreen and both of you need it. Dogs with light-colored noses are especially susceptible to sunburns and can get skin cancer just like we humans can;

Appropriate Dress as in cooler weather, you will want an extra layer of clothing for you and your dog, if he tolerates clothes. In summer, you will want to put a cool, wet bandana or scarf around yours and your dog`s neck.

Make sure to bring plenty of water ( for you & Fido). You can find collapsible bowls for your pooch. Food should be given on rest breaks so it doesn`t upset your dog`s stomach.

Be aware of your surroundings. Plan hikes on well kept trails and watch out for wildlife! Mind your manners and clean up after your dog. Keeping your dog on a leash will help keep the fauna and flora undisturbed. If others are moving faster than you are, let them pass easily.

Lastly enjoy this time with your furry friend.
