The first tip you should know is; as soon as you bring your new Labrador puppy home, he/she should begin his training. From 2 months onward is the perfect time to start training him! At this age you have a better chance of the dog understanding exactly what you want him to learn and how to behave. A young dog`s mind can easily adapt to new ideas.
You should look at training your Labrador puppy as a challenge and have the patience and time to train him properly. Labs are extremely intelligent and very easily trained, which is why they are a popular breed with dog owners. Use this to your advantage by shaping your Labs behavior as early as possible, this way, your companion will be well-behaved at a young age. This will hopefully prevent bad habits from forming.
Give your puppy a couple days to get used to his new home and then start introducing him to new people, other animals and certain situations. Show him around the house and get him in a daily eating and sleeping routine.
The number two tip is that Labradors will require you to be the leader at all times. You should be able to motivate your Lab to cooperate with you as they have a superb willingness to learn. Once your Lab understands you can take good care of him, he will start to trust you. He looks to you as the leader , so you must show him you are the leader by guiding him in all of his learning.
Tip three is; you should not punish your Labrador as this could cause aggressive behavior. Simply correct your puppy in what he did wrong and show him the right way again. Always reward your Lab`s positive behavior, such as giving treats and he will catch on much faster.
The fourth tip is don`t forget your Labrador needs constant socialization. This breed can be very attached to their owners, so give them other animals and people to bond and interact with. Even a simple walk in the park can help prevent the development of anxiety in your Lab.
The fifth tip is consistency and it is required to ensure your Labrador will learn his commands and tasks more easily. Remember, repetition is key to their training!
One last thing, consider taking your puppy to a puppy school they usually only last a few weeks and it is a great way to get started, if you haven't had a puppy before, it also is a great way to start socializing your puppy and meeting other people in your area with similar interests such as your puppies.
