Description
The Great Dane was originally bred to hunt wild animals. Further breeding and development gave him gentle and kind characteristics. This dog is good-natured, warm, sweet and loving. He is rarely aggressive or overly protective.
Great Danes are not usually suited for apartment living not because they are active but basically because they need space for their giant size. They thrive on human companionship and are excellent with children and other animals.
As a giant breed he has a lower life expectancy than smaller breeds and will require only moderate exercise. The lifestyle should avoid activities that can be stressful to the dogs bones and joints. The Great Dane needs little coat care though he will shed.
He will not cope well with rough handling and should be handled and trained with gentle positive methods. Overall he is a generally wonderful dog with an even nature and gentle, genuine disposition.
