What do I do when bringing my kitten home.

Published on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 in Cats and Kittens

Bringing home a kitten to your home is already a big responsibility especially when there are other animals living in the same house. Your family might love the new addition but you should think about what your other pets will feel as well as how you will introduce your new kitten to the fold. If you want to make the transition an enjoyable one, here are a few tips that you should know about.

  • Limit Its Exploration – Cats are inquisitive by nature and so will your kitty. Make sure that you limit the area where it can explore before allowing it to roam to other parts of your home. Start by keeping the kitten in a room for a few days before expanding its world slowly.
  • Provide Own Food and Water Dish – Make sure that your kitten has its own food and water dish. Don’t let it eat or drink from another cat’s bowl as this will cause some problems.
  • Play with the Kitten – Take the time to play with your kitten or at least provide it with toys that will help stimulate pouncing and stalking. These two skills are important in the development of the kitten not just in terms of instinct but also with its bone and muscle growth.
  • Vaccination – Kittens, just like puppies, need to be vaccinated to prevent them from acquiring diseases. Usually, a series of vaccination should be given to ensure that the vaccines will stay for a long time to keep your pet healthy.
  • Discipline – Kittens can be too playful at times which can lead to destroyed furniture or you being scratched all the time. You might think that cats cannot be disciplined but this is wrong. Making a sound or using remote punishment works best in disciplining a kitten. Remote punishment is using tools to distract or punish the kitten if it behaves badly without it associating the punishment directly to you.
  • Feeding – During the first few months, you need to provide your kitten with adequate diet to help it grow healthy. Choose a name brand cat food.

These are just a few things that you should keep in mind when planning on bringing a kitten home with you. Caring for one is a big responsibility and you should be better prepared for the work that comes along with it.
